One of my favorite songs is "Walk Around My House" by Sarah McMillan.
“Walk around my house
And turn it upside down
Your love pursues me
Open up my windows
and unlock all my doors
You know You own me"
Sunday after service I drove home singing these words.
Pastor Ryan preached from John chapter 2 where we see Jesus cleansing the temple and turning over tables. We learned that in this time, the temple was the place where the Spirit of God would dwell. By the markets they had set up, they were dishonoring the house of the Lord.
In 1 Corinthians 6:19a it says "Don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own...”
The same way that God dwelled in the temple, He has made His dwelling place among us. God desires to cleanse us the same way that He did in the temple. And because the same Spirit dwells in us, we have full access to it (1 Corinthians 2:10-12)
He promises in His word that when we seek Him with our whole heart we will find Him. But "our whole heart" means with every single piece of who we are. We can't hold anything back.
So like the song says, if we were to let Jesus walk around our house and unlock all of our doors, what would he be turning upside down? What parts of your life are you holding back that God seeks to transform?
Surrendering everything to God can often times feel uncomfortable. It's backwards from how the world works. We are so used to being the ones in control and trying to have it all together on our own. But God seeks to transform whatever we are holding on to because He wants us to walk in His goodness. Even as our flesh is fighting transformation, when we give it to him we will experience God's freedom.
"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" - 2 Corinthians 3:17
If you have heard the Lord speak to you and aren't sure what to do next, take time to sit with the scriptures from this sermon. Ask the Lord to search your heart and reveal to you what he wants to transform. What would walking out that obedience look like? Come up with a practical plan for your next step. That could look like committing to abiding in God's word or giving up something you know he's asking you to. Trust the Hoy Spirit to guide you, and make space for Him in the temple of your heart.
